I believe it depends on the person. I’ve only had one addiction and I’ve never completely ‘cured’ myself, as I’ve never wanted to, but I have reduced the frequency of my particular ‘drug’.

Others prefer to go cold turkey, because then the pain (or whatever) of losing their ‘drug’ isn’t drawn out. Just my thoughts 🙂

I quit cigarettes and alcohol cold turkey. I do not crave alcohol but I do crave cigarettes from time to time. It’s normal, and I may always crave them from time to time. But alcoholism and tobacco addiction are more than simply addictions, they are diseases with a predictable course, predictable symptoms, progression and a predictable outcome which is death.

Some things, such as long-term use of benzodiazepines and anti-psychotics, ADHD amphetamines, and other drugs are not safe to quit cold turkey, in fact quitting cold turkey can cause severe damage, even death in the case of some – but most drugs can be safely withdrawn from on a scale of 25% less every other day. Even so, the withdrawal syndrome can last up to 2 years after the last dose while the body and brain (and every cell in the body) try to become “normal” again. Narcotics Anonymous is invaluable to recovering drug addicts.

Gambling addictions, stealing and shoplifting addictions, and sex or porn addictions should be quit cold turkey and replaced with a recovery program. The 12-step self-help programs have the largest treatment success rates over the long term. Those are just recovering addicts helping recovering addicts.

So it just depends on the addiction.
