MDR-TB: Senzo’s Story – In Swaziland, seven-year-old Senzo has been on treatment for multi drug-resistant tuberculosis for several months. This includes daily injections and 14 pills per day. He has 19 more months of treatment to go. There are no medicines specially formulated for children with drug-resistant TB, which makes treatment extremely difficult for the young patients and their caretakers. Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is currently treating 26 children with drug-resistant TB in Swaziland. Since November 2007, almost 300 patients have been enrolled into DR-TB treatment in Shiselweni. According to the Drug Susceptibility Testing survey conducted in Swaziland in 2009 and 2010, 20 percent of TB patients have a drug-resistant form of TB.
